Acne is a condition recognized by skin eruptions on the face, back, chest, neck and shoulders. The most common form of acne is Acne Vulgaris presenting with blackheads, whiteheads and red blemishes on the skin.  In more severe cases (Cystic Acne), there will be clusters of painful, fluid-filled lumps underneath the skin surface.  Both conditions could lead to permanent scarring of the skin.

Acne occurs when the hair follicles are blocked with dead skin cells, bacteria and oil. The oil (sebaceous) glands at the base of hair follicles in the skin secretes too much oil (sebum) and  cause blemishes such as pimples, blackheads, whiteheads or cysts on the skin. 

The condition can develop at any age but is usually associated with teenagers as hormonal imbalances – a common problem during adolescence – can lead to the overproduction of oil.
